A Message From the President: Ron Lupski Save the Forge River, Inc. was created to address the horrific conditions affecting the Forge River. Since its inception it has been an advocate for not only the Forge River but for the entire South Shore Estuary. The sustainability of Long Island waters is of paramount importance to all of us. Our lifestyle, our environment and our economy are all dependent on the health of Long Island waters. We are pleased that funding has been allocated for the Army Corp of Engineers to come in and evaluate the situation of the Forge River. All of us at Save the Forge River, Inc. have been working with Senator Schumer and Congressman Bishop towards this goal and are pleased it is finally coming to fruition. The only obstacle now is finding the local match for the funding. We believe that Suffolk County needs to step up to the plate and be our local match and are currently waiting for an answer from County Executive Levy. We at Save the Forge River, Inc. believe that increased tidal flow is fundamental to the restoration of the Forge River and its estuaries. It is our opinion, that increased tidal flow could be achieved by opening a channel in the Moriches Inlet. Periodic and timely maintenance dredging of the intercoastal channel from Moriches Inlet to the Smith Point Bridge, as well as opening channels to each of the estuaries, will promote tidal flushing. Increasing the Tidal flow as well as a shore-to-shore environmental restoration of the rivers sediment is necessary to remedy the anoxic, eutrophic condition of the river and its tributaries. The excessive sedimentation of the waterway, and the associated biological demand, can only be remedied by its removal from the system. Storm water remediation is another key element in curing the pollution problem that plagues the Forge River. The town of Brookhaven and Suffolk County must both address this issue. Wetland restoration is also a key element. The wetlands act as a natural filtration system and effectively reduce pollutants caused by run off. The destruction and reduction of wetlands around the Forge River and the entire South Shore Estuary has had a negative effect on the waterway and we hope to receive grants for wetland restoration in the near future. Future Goals also include education, reduction of pesticides and fertilizer use in the Forge River watershed area and the eventual creation of a sewer district. The Forge River is only three miles long. If we cannot save this one small river than what hope do we have for the future of our small planet? |
